How we handle this data
We relay, we do not author
Warning text, instructions, alert levels and activity notices are reproduced as the issuing agency published them. This site never writes, upgrades, downgrades or infers a warning.
Model output is labelled as model output
Forecast-derived risk indicators, river-discharge forecasts and model comparisons are calculated from numerical data and are always presented in separately marked blocks, with the exact threshold or method stated. They are never mixed in with official warnings.
Failures are shown, not hidden
If a source cannot be reached, the affected panel says “data temporarily unavailable” and reports when that source last responded. We never substitute placeholder values, and an unreachable feed is never rendered as a count of zero.
Age is always visible
Every page states how old its data is. For feeds that publish continuously, that is the source’s own timestamp. For feeds that publish only when an event occurs (volcano notices, tsunami bulletins), we show when we last checked, because a long quiet period is normal and should not read as stale data.
Keys stay on the server
Provider API keys are read only inside server-side API routes. No private key is ever included in JavaScript sent to the browser.
